The Top Five Songs I Always Sing To. A List.

I love to sing. Adam and I bonded over belting out tunes while driving, and I still frequently embarrass myself at stoplights. Add your favorites in the comments and I will buy them and sing them with my windows down, to the shame of my as-yet-unconceived children.

  • “Better Way” by Ben Harper. This song begs to be belted, especially since Ben sings harmony for much of it and allows us laypeople to sound oh-so-delicious when we sing along.

  • “Heart Like Mine” by Miranda Lambert. I sang this song over and over after Linda died. I imagined her laughing, with a glass of chardonnay in one hand and an arm outstretched in a hug for those of us left behind, welcoming us in to a home with Jesus and an understanding far beyond what we can see now.

  • “Stay Don’t Go” by Spoon. It’s just fun. The video is terrible, but the song is great. Download it. Now.

  • “Dancing with Dreams” by Phil Vassar. Please ignore the Jersey Shore video and just listen. It’s the most singable, sad and beautiful song. About memories and life and moving on and finding love and this is why I sing in the car by myself, OK? (sniffle)

  • “Already Gone” by the Socal Vocals (and Kelly, obvy.) This song is SO fun to sing, especially when you imagine a killer a capella choir behind you. (You do that, right? No? Just me? OK.) Adam sings tenor on this song, and I love it. SO many benefits to being married to that good ol’ Church of Christ heritage, not the least of which is a capella abilities and four-part harmony loving.

What are your “belt-it-out-in-the-car” songs? I obviously need new material. My vocal chords are prepared. Hit me.

  1. Aw I love that mental picture you gave about Linda. I went through a huge a Phil Vassar phase in high school…maybe it is time to revisit.

My most recent favorite belt it out in the car song is “Silence in Me” by Six Market Blvd. I was going to tell you and Adam to download it actually…its Texas country and they even do a little accapella chorus.

  2. oh gosh. i have spent many years singing at the top of my lungs and sit down dancin to songs in my car.. so picking 5 songs is actually really hard! here are five that come to mind first because of excellent memories of people singing them with me:

    1. come on eileen – dexys midnight runners (always loved this) //
    2. somebody like you – keith urban (oh college days) //
    3. cold as ice – foreigner (my hubs singing the chorus awesomely wrong haha) //
    4. september – earth wind & fire (blasting it at home with my mom & dancing away at my wedding, in september!) //
    5. lady – styx (i have no explanation for this. i just love it) //

  3. 1. Kelly Clarkson- Since You’ve Been Gone (tears streaming after my divorce)
    2. JT- What Goes Around Comes Around (also post-split)
    3. Mercy Me-No More No Less (finding my identity stage)
    4. Nina Simone-My Baby Just Cares For Me (Falling in Love with Tim)
    5. Miley Cyrus-Party in the USA (what can I say? I’ve got 3 kiddos!)

I think we could make a musical collage out of our lives.
