“I dare you to jump over the fire hydrant!”

Little boys are awesome. Kids, in general, are awesome. In case you’re wondering where all this appreciation is coming from, I’m doing this all week, and it, too, is awesome.

I, however, am not always an awesome leader, or “Guide” as we’re called in Super GigaWorld. I’m kinda maybe a little bit of a big kid, and MIGHT have dared my little fellas to jump over a very large fire hydrant today. Which they did, and seemed jazzed about it, despite the fact that halfway through I wondered if they might fall and bust their lips on the pavement and I might have not been super wise to encourage such activities. The little girls love my “AG” (Assistant Guide) because he’s 15 and adorable and shy, and the little boys like me because I recklessly dare them to do foolish things.  I love how every few minutes we talk about Jesus, how everything all day at VBS is Christ-centered and still so fun. I love it when they sidle up for hugs, when they make me laugh, when they are amazed at my 26 years and how ancient I am.  I love their hugs and paint-stained fingers and the way that they look to us for guidance and approval, and every now and then, a really rotten idea like a big, dangerous item to jump over, with hard pavement underneath it.
