List #2: Signs of Spring

Today is the second day of March, and I can feel Lady Spring’s arrival from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. Here, a list of how I sense Spring is coming:

  • The desire to work out. While I like to be active, working out is rarely on the top of my list.. except in the spring, when thoughts of toned abs and weekend excursions force me to go sweat.
  • Fruit. Nothing is really in season, yet, even here in Southern California, but I can’t help but buy juice and frozen berries and make smoothies and popsicles, even as I shiver in my sweatshirt.
  • Plans. We are going to Catalina in May, camping in March, hopefully rock-climbing in April. We are talking about road-trips and cook-outs and beach days. Hurray!
  • Wildflowers. We took a hike on Saturday afternoon on our local hills, and although a stiff, wintery ocean breeze chilled our noses, specks of yellow and violet are beginning to dot the hills.
  • Hope. No matter how temperate or severe a climate you live in, the arrival of Spring brings hope. Hope for long days and warm nights, hope for new challenges and embraced ambition, hope for a season yet unseen and a new life that is still emerging.

  1. This reminded me of a song I used to listen to by a Christian singer, Nicole Nordeman. The song is called Every Season. Here’s the part about Spring:

And everything that’s new has bravely surfaced
    Teaching us to breathe
What was frozen through is newly purposed
    Turning all things green
    So it is with You
And how You make me new
    With every season’s change
    And so it will be
    As You are re-creating me
    Summer, autumn, winter, spring
