The Sing-Off – Why are the Mercenaries still here?

Rock Anthems and Guilty Pleasures. Sing it, boys and girls!

The Backbeats (aka The Mercenaries) “You Give Love a Bad Name” – I’m sorry, it’s not just because I hate them, but this song did nothing for me. I love a capella so it’s hard for me to not like any a capella arrangement, but this just was not that good. “The Love Shack” OK, this song was good. They were funny, but a ton of their appeal was the costuming and choreography. In case you’re wondering, I still hate them.

Street Corner Symphony “Creep” – I was really hoping for Skynyrd from these boys, but by the first note I was sold on “Creep”. It’s such a raw, emotional song and they performed it in a personal, powerful way. Incredible.

“Come On Eileen” Again, boys! SKYNYRD. Please. 😉 But this was a great song. They’re awesome. I have nothing else to say. Also, Ben Folds pointed out that it was like five versions of the song in one, which was impressive to say the least.

Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – These guys are so likable. One of the troubles is that they are older, so their voices don’t have the same quality as the young pups, but they are still pure quality. “Easy” This was my favorite song of theirs yet. Easy is right.

On the Rocks “Pour Some Sugar on Me” – SO fun. They haven’t moved from Entertainer to Artist, but holy crap, they’re fun. Honestly, I spend a lot of time listening to music because of my commute, and rock-out, window-down songs almost always win in the iPod shuffle. This one would definitely be on repeat. I definitely saw the moment when they saved themselves in this song, and I was SO happy. I love them and I want to feed them lunch. “Kyrie” They’re going artist with the guilty pleasure song, which is classic. It’s great, fun and guilty as heck.

Groove for Thought “Changes” – Their lead singer was the young chick this time. I love her voice, but she wasn’t enunciating or commanding stage presence like a rocker. I guess they didn’t get the memo that this was supposed to be a rock anthem? “You”re Making My Dreams Come True” Joyful but still, not my fave. They’re such nice people, though, that I really want them to kick out the Mercenaries.

Committed “Every Breath You Take” – This was AMAZING. The judges gave them a hard time for not rocking out, but HOLY COW it was good. Off to find video! Y’all have to see this.

“I Want it That Way” Nick Lachey is offended. Boy bands are not guilty pleasures, this is ART, people! I love them. I just read Ben Folds’ blog and saw some great points about Committed’s weaknesses, but I still can’t help myself. It was funny and soulful and lovable. I also want to make them sandwiches. (Hey, their pastor isn’t in LA grilling chicken, OK? They look hungry.)

Has anybody else noticed that Nichole only agrees with everybody else? She has nothing new to say, and her yearning for sex appeal reminds me of Kara DioGuardi. Why are all these women judges so needy?

Elimination – Groove for Thought goes home, and other contestants cry because they’re nice and not MERCENARIES.

  1. You do realize that your comment about the chicken grillin pastor could possibly be construed as racist if they didn’t see the episode where the pastor was grilling about 70 chickens at once…. 🙂

  2. I’m really missing some of the groups from last year…like the group from Tufts. I need to get over it…

I have to admit I did like the Mercenaries until this week…I really didn’t care for their opening number either. Although their guilty pleasure was one of the more fun ones I thought.
